Funerals

 



This photo was taken by the Zambia country programme manager on one of the roads leading out of Lusaka. It captures something of the enormity of this epidemic and the attempts people are making to cope with it.

There are so many funerals. There was a team meeting this morning. Someone said well, I can't make that because I have a funeral. Sorry, people murmured. Something else is not done because the woman doing it had a funeral. People say it in a matter of fact way, like they are going to the dentist. It must be so difficult to find the space to grieve.
